Asking beyond: ‘What do you want to work on’?
Contracting is a crucial initial step in the coaching process that establishes a strong foundation for subsequent sessions.
During this phase, the coach collaborates with the client to clearly define objectives and expectations.
Many clients simply state a general intent, such as wanting to work on personal development, without exploring deeper motivations.
However, effective contracting goes beyond surface-level goals.
It involves asking probing questions such as “What exactly do you want to achieve?” and “Why is this important to you?”
Whether the goal is to become a better partner, an improved leader, or to enhance overall life satisfaction, clarity is essential.
Additionally, the coach should inquire, “How can I best support you?”
This dialogue ensures that both parties share a common understanding, establishes a commitment to the process, and sets a measurable path for success.
Ultimately, well-conducted contracting builds trust and creates a roadmap that guides the coaching journey to success.
